The Maldives officially welcomed its one millionth tourist of the year on June 21, 2026. While the archipelago achieved this major milestone in a similar timeframe to last year, overall visitor numbers are experiencing a slight downturn.According to recent data from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, total arrivals reached 1,040,976 as of June 24—marking a 4.9% decline compared to the same period in 2025.A Rollercoaster First Half of the YearThe dip in arrivals is largely attributed to a challenging spring season, which offset a strong start to the year.The Peaks: The year began with promising growth, as January arrivals rose by 5.0% and February surged by 17.7%. May also saw a minor recovery of 1.7%.The Troughs: A sharp downturn hit in March (down 19.8%) and April (down 24.4%). Local guesthouses accommodated 239,089 tourists (23.5%), while hotels and liveaboard vessels hosted the remainder. To support this influx, the Maldives currently has 98.6% of its 68,628 total bed capacity actively operational across 1,298 facilities.In terms of arrival hubs, Velana International Airport (VIA) handled the vast majority of traffic, welcoming 1,013,434 visitors (97.4%).
